When you install a norcold cooling unit you need to understand a few things that will help the installation process go smoothly. Many of the instructions for installing new cooling units suggest using thermal mastic to seal the foam pack into its pocket. This stuff is a thermal conductor; it’s not an insulator, it should be scraped off and replaced with low expansion spray foam.
Another important thing to understand is that the boiler temperature of a Dometic or Norcold cooling unit must be limited below normal. Otherwise the evaporator will overheat, damaging the boiler and the evaporator tubing. The patented Fridge Defend by ARP (see the ad on this page) can prevent cooling unit overheating, but the damage done before that may not be reversed.
One of the most common causes of Norcold refrigerator failure is a faulty thermostatic switch. In a slide-mounted fridge that switch controls the two rear Norcold fans and when it is mounted in the incorrect position, the fridge does not cool because the fan never comes on. JC Refrigeration mounts the thermostatic switch in a different location than Norcold, allowing the rear fans to start operating several hours sooner in the cooling cycle, pulling heat out of the fridge faster.
A simple but critical step in a proper installation is to lay the refrigerator flat on its side, with the evaporator holding tank above the freezer compartment. This will allow the water from the evaporator to run down into the cold solution container without pushing it up against the walls of the fridge. rv refrigerator cooling fans
